Description
| - Protists of the genus Sarcocystis are parasites with a requisite two-host life cycle based on a prey-predator (intermediate-definitive) host relationship. The species with macroscopic cysts often observed in wild ducks is Sarcocystis rileyi, which causes the disease known as %22rice breast disease%22 in waterfowl from North America and the striped skunk is the only known definitive host for S. rileyi in the North America. We employed light microscopy, electron microscopy, and DNA sequencing for studying samples of muscle containing macroscopic cysts in naturally-infected mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and Euroasian wigeon (Anas penelope) which had been shot in the Czech Republic and Finland. According to molecular (SSU rRNA) and morphological (histology, TEM) results, macroscopic cysts examined correspond to Sarcocystis rileyi. One out of five examined raccoon (Procoyn lotor) was positive for Sarcocystis-like sporocysts in faeces, and sequences of nuclear SSU rRNA indicated that S. rileyi is employing raccoon as the definitive host. The effect of wild duck migration, the emerging and spreading of new parasite species and introducing of raccoons as an invasive carnivore species for distribution of S. rileyi in Europe is discussed.
