Description
  • Acquired syndrome of dental disease is in rabbits and rodents with complete elodont dentition the most frequent health disorder. In comparison to other small mammals rabbits are more affected by periapical infections and associate facial abscesses. Appropriate treatment of osteomyelitis includes surgical intervention in combination with antibiotic therapy. Bacterial pathogens commonly involved in periapical lesions are Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella heparinolytica, Prevotella spp., Peptostreptococcus micros, Streptococcus milleri group, Actinomyces israelii and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. Treatment of authors choice is abscess marsupialization, thorough wound debridement, affected tooth extraction and affected bone removal. Choice of anti-infective agents for the treatment of osteomyelitis is based on cytological and microbiological findings and antimicrobial sensitivity. Use of combination of fluoroquinolones (enrofloxacine, marbofloxacine) and beta-lactams (penicillin G) is recommended. In case of bacterial resistance to beta-lactams, metronidazol is added to the therapeutical protocol. Article presents a stepby- step recommended treatment for facial abscesses in rabbits including drug dosages.
