Description	Melanoma is a common disease occuring in many horse breeds. The immunity-related genes can be considered as functional candidate genes for melanoma formation. Fifty microsatellite markers located on 29 out of 31 pairs of horse chromosomes and 36 polymorphic markers located in 26 expressed candidate genes were genotyped. The strong association of the STX17 duplication with melanoma were confirmed in this population. In addition, SNPs within the TLR4 gene linked to STX17 were also associated with melanoma. Two linked markers on ECA9, the microsatellite HTG004 and SNP within the matrix metalloproteinase 16 represent a second group of associated markers. The markers identified can be ivestigated as tools for designing a conservation program aiming to reduce incidence of melanoma without reducing population diversity and specifity.
