| - Purpose of study: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the aetiology, clinical signs, treatment, complications and prognosis of primary oesophageal obstruction in horses. Methods: Primary oesophageal obstruction cases were selected and subsequently analysed from the medical records of all horses admitted to the Equine Clinic Brno between the years 2004-2009. Secondary oesophageal obstructions were excluded. Results: Twenty two cases of simple oesophageal obstruction in 21 horses met the inclusion criteria. The most common presenting clinical sign was bilateral nasal discharge of saliva or food (19; 86.4%). Seventeen obstructions were caused by chewed hay or pellets (77.3%), two by wood shavings (9.1%) and in three cases the cause remained obscure. All horses were treated medically. The most common complication seen was oesophagitis (15; 68.2%) and upper airway trauma (14; 63.6%). Twenty one horses were released home (95.5%) and one died at the clinic (4.5%). A long term follow up (}6 months) was obtained in 19 horses from the 20 survivors. Seventeen horses were clinically normal (89.5%), five of which had had their diet changed. Two cases (10.5%) developed oesophageal stricture and were euthanized. Conclusions: Some new data about oesophageal obstruction treatment and possible complications are given in this study. Short term follow up revealed excellent results and long term follow up good results in this group of horses.
