Description	Between January 1(st), 2001, and December 31, 2002, 15 dogs (nine males and six females) were presented with congenital cleft palates, and underwent surgical correction. In six cases post-surgical complications developed and reoperation was necessary. in another patient total failure of therapy had occurred, caused by an operation elsewhere, and euthanasia had to be performed. It can be seen from the results that successful treatment depends on the severity of the defect, a careful method for softs parts, the timing of the surgery, and, particularly, the skills and experiences of the surgeon. Very extensive palate clefts often need several treatments to close the defect gradually. Correspondingly the owner must be informed thoroughly.
