Description
  • Tularaemia belongs to important zoonoses occurring in natural foci. The agent circulates among many wild animals, especially small mammals which are considered to be its reservoir hosts. Under favourable conditions the sporadic cases aggregate into the epizootic becoming danger for the human population at the same time. There are several possibilities of transmission to humans - handling of diseased animals (hares, in particular), drinking contaminated water, aspiration of contaminated dust or aerosol,as well as trough involvement of vectors. Clinical signs of the disease in humans are then characterised by several different forms in dependence on the infection entry site. Based on these facts we recognise ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, pulmonary and intestinal forms. Higher prevalence of the disease in hares found during autumn hare-shooting in south of Moravia in 1994 has drawn the attention of veterinarians engaged in the endeavour to solve the situation in the endemic focus.
