Description
  • Sustainable production of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as a source crop for safety food and feed, oil and decorative, industrial and bioenergetic purposes for market or processing, and as silage requires scientific management of many practices such as appropriate plant population density management, timely seeding and harvesting, irrigation, weeds and pests management etc. This contribution reviews the recent advances in sunflower nutrients management in relation to the crop's growth, development, yield formation and quality, with respect to the economic factors as well as the environmental sustainability of the sunflower production. Besides theoretical information (such as the morphology of the plant, the evaluation of the growth and development, the dynamics of the phytomass growth, the yieldcreating factors analysis, the classification according to the production purpose -- silage/direct feeding, decorative, seed for oil etc.), this work is dedicated to the technologies of sunflower growing, i.e. regionalization (area of spreading), types of varieties (according to the production purpose, the vegetation length etc.) and their selection process, modern cultivation procedures, establishment and treatment of a stand of sunflower plants, nutrition and fertilization (by both macro and microelements), basis of protection of stands against pests (diseases, damage caused by herbivores etc.), harvest, post-harvest adjustment, storage and quality of seeds.
