Description
  • Our research focused on the efficiency of herbicide control method against European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) on heavily infected species of Acer campestre L. and Tilia cordata Mill. For this purpose four different herbicides (glyphosate, MCPA, dicamba and fluroxypyr) were tested. Our experimental mature individuals were 12-15 m high in average with mildly decreased vitality. The chemical applications were carried out previously with the help of tree climbers at the end of the dormancy period, before budding of the host trees. We obtained the best result by using fluroxypyr, which caused extensive defoliation of mistletoe and later the death of visible part. During the vegetation period no regeneration was observed. MCPA and dicamba were less effective, only 20 % of sprayed mistletoe dried and no regeneration was observed either. Glyphosate caused only little chlorosis and defoliation of the shrubs and later the mistletoe gradually regenerated. No damage was observed on the host. Some practical problems occurred during applications like damage on the host, which was caused by tree climbers.
