Description
| - Rapid technical advances currently make airborne laser scanning (ALS) one of the most promising technologies for the retrieval of detailed information on forests at different levels, i.e., from individual trees to the plot/stand level to inventories at the national level. ALS data has proven superior qualities compared the other types of optical data used for forest inventory. Potential of ALS data for forestry applications is great. Despite this, their usage for current forestry practice in the Czech Republic is still very limited. As demonstrated here, a several attempts to analyse ALS data in the context of forestry application have been made. These are mainly research activities that are limited to small areas and to answer specific research questions. Moreover, ALS data processing into DSM, DEM and CHM and subsequent analysis require special software and some basic knowledge processing techniques and GIS software. All this put great demands on potential users of public administration (environmental agencies, forest managers, etc.).
