Description	Variation of sequences of five EST-derived markers was investigated in three Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) provenances originating from different altitudes growing at two cimatically contrasting trial plots in Slovakia (450 m and 1250 m a.s.l.) within a Slovak spin-off experiment of the IUFRO 1964/68 provenance experiment with Norway spruce. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were identified and differences in allele frequencies at polymorphic sites were tested against altitude. Overall, 61 sites out of the total sequence length of 3702 bp were polymorphic in the studied material. No clear trends were observed in nucleotide diversity among provenances, but allelic richness (within-population number of SNPs) decreased with altitude. Almost no significant differentiation was observed. The outcomes of the study confirm our previous results with the same material, meaning that provenances do not show signs of local adaptation. The results are discussed in the light of potential causes of the absence of trends.
