Description
  • Inonotus obliquus causes a white heart rot on several broadleaved species. This fungus forming a typical charcoal black colored sterile, or cinder conks on infected stems of birches Betula spp. The dark brown pulp of the sterile conk is formed by pure mycelial mass of fungus. Sterile conks called chaga are used in folk medicine in Russia. Range of distribution of I. obliquus is circumboreal in boreal forest ecosystems on birches Betula spp. and in meridional mountain forests on beech Fagus spp., around 45° northern latitude in Russia, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern, rarely also in Western and Southern Europe, Northern America, Asia, eg. Kazachstan, Japan and Korea. Infected trees grow for many years without several symptom of decline. Infection penetrates to trees throughout some injuries in stem, outwards start develop sterile conks later. In the Czech Republic, cinder conks was found mostly in peat bogs and in mountains areas with more colder and humid climate on birches, although is widespread i
