Description
  • Data obtained from localities on the upper forest limit are valuable in assessing climate changes and detailed research is also necessary by reason of understanding ecological adaptations of P. pumila as a species, which survives being vital thanks to its properties. In the Svyatoi Nos Peninsula, three localities were selected differing in altitude, viz. 1815 m (locality A), 1110 m (locality B) and 466 m (locality C). In locality C, only the growth form of P. pumila was determined. In localities A and B dry mass, leaf area and specific leaf were measured. Anatomical studies were carried out of shoots and four needle-years. It was found that needles were longer and also narrower at locality B as against locality A. As for the specific leaf weight, this value was higher at locality A and also substantial increase in older needle-years occurred. Cuts through particular needles showed that at locality B, the area of a central cylinder was 50% lower as against locality A. The area of resin ducts in needles
