Description
  • Genus Phellinus belongs to common wood-decaying fungi containing various chemical compounds with promisible utilisation in pharmacology. One of important infrageneric groups of the genus is so-called Phellinus igniarius group involving several sibling species with different affinity to various host tree species. According to hints in literature, Phellinus igniarius s.s. occurres exclusively on Salix, P. nigricans on Betula and host spectrum of P. alni is not clear. The aim of our study was to confirm current taxonomical concept of the group using the DNA sequences of ITS region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and tef1 gene coding for translation elongation factor 1 alpha gene (EF1a). A Neighbor-Joining phylogenetic analysis was carried out using MEGA 4 software. Phylogenetic analyses based on both DNA regions revealed significant differences between specimens growing on distinct host tree species. While Phellinus igniarius s.s. is growing only on Salix or Populus nigra, Phellinus alni occurres on large spect
