  • In recent years, there were marked changes in the anhtopogenous pollution in the whole territory of the Czech Repubic. In the region of the Krušné hory Mountains, the air pollution with sulphur oxides considerably decreased but the concentration of ozone in forest stands growing in altitudes higher than 800 m above sea level exceeded the acceptable level. This phenomenon caused a visible damage of assimilation apparatus of trees: the layer of epicuticular waxes on the surface of leaves and needles was damaged and the amounts of these protective substances were reduced. The damage increased with increasing altitude and the silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) showed to be the most sensitive of all tree species under study. Although the species Carpathian birch (Betula carpatica W. et K.) and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.)grew in the some site, their damage was less pronounced.

  • V posledních letech došlo na celém území České republiky ke změně ve složení antropogenní zátěže. V oblasti Krušných hor pokleslo imisní zatížení oxidy síry, ale byli naměřeny nadlimitní koncentrace přízemního ozonu v lesních porostech nacházející se v nadmořských výškách nad 800 metrů. Zvýšené koncentrace ozonu způsobují poškození asimilačního aparátu, které je vizuálně patrné. Dochází k úbytku a destrukci epikutikulárních vosků na povrchu listů a jehlic. Toto poškození se zvyšuje se stoupající nadmořskou výškou porostů. Bříza bělokorá je nejsenzitivnější vůči ozonu z dřevin sledovaných v oblasti Krušné hory. Nejmenší poškození asimilačního aparátu bylo prokázáno u břízy karpatské a břízy pýřité i když tyto dřeviny rostou na stejném stanovišti jako bříza bělokorá. (cs)
