Description
| - Activation of socio-economic potential appears a crucial factor of regional development. Any intervention both at national or local level aimed on regional development should be consistent with an essential characteristic of regional development, i.e. sustainability. As there are many different methods for evaluating of sustainable development and this methodology has not been unified so far, it is not all clear, especially for regional authorities, what methodology to use to monitor and to analyse the level of sustainable development in their regions. Most of the worldwide or national sets of indicators are not very suitable at the regional level. Aside from general aspects regional application should also reflect local specificities. Corresponding indicators of sustainable development should reflect aspects of social equity, interests of local economies, environmental protection and also provide a tool for evaluation of the role of local governments and authorities or provision of local necessities. Indicators enable to identify regional problems and contribute to their redemption. In the first part the article summarizes existing methods of assessment of sustainable development at different levels (world, national, regional) and considers the use of the basic set of indicators mostly used in EU - European common indicators -- in the conditions of the Czech Republic and its regions. In the course of the analysis was set out the question whether this methodology could be transferred and applied into the Czech regional conditions without any change and how does it interfere with the national set of indicators. In the second part these two methodologies are discussed and compared, partial changes are proposed and certain new considerations are offered. Coming of this analysis was identified the need of a specific set of indicators of sustainable regional development for regions with dominantly rural character.
