Description
| - A dry period of six to eight weeks for dairy cows is well known to be optimal to maximise milk production in the next lactation. Recently, several studies have shed a different light on this long tradition of a dry period for dairy cows. Shortening or omitting the dry period shifts milk production from the critical period shortly after calving to the weeks before calving, when the energy demands for milk production can be matched easily by feed intake. Available studies illustrate that this partial shift in milk production has the potential to improve the energy balance and reduce health and fertility disorders of dairy cows in early lactation. The objective of this study is to systematically review the current knowledge on dry period length in relation to milk production characteristics, energy balance, fertility, and health of cows and calves using original studies on planned animal experiments. Furthermore, for variables where at least five studies are available a meta-analysis approach is used. These studies indicate that shortening, or omitting, the dry period is a viable n interesting approach to manage health and fertility of high-producing dairy cows, with the potential to lower veterinary costs and ease cow management. Currently, application in practice is limited, which is possibly associated with several questions and uncertainties concerning the consequences for milk yield, mammary health, colostrum quality and calf development, effect on net farm returns, and management of cows with a shortened or no dry period.
