Description
Občané %Svýcasrka idmítli vstup do EEA v roce 1992. (cs)
  • Switzerland matches historically with successes. It is unfortunately not the case anymore. The interest for the special case of Switzerland has definitively disappeared. Claiming their neutrality and sovereignty, Swiss citizen refused in 1992 the entrance to the European Economic Area (EEA). The Swiss economy is highly globalized, and the European Union is by far the most important economic partner of Switzerland: more than 60% of Swiss exports go to the Union and nearly 80% come from the Union. Bilateral negotiations are conducted between Switzerland and the Union in seven individual treaties. Now, the 2004 European enlargement to Central Europe countries redistributes again all the cards. Recent political events have seen Swiss government leans toward right-wing parties, essentially euroseptics and Switzerland risk to become slowly marginalized from Europe Union, its neighbor and main trade partner. It is still time, but urgent, for Switzerland to join the EU and descend from its paper pedestal.
