  • The adapted physical education is a relatively young scholar discipline. This discipline can be traced back as far as 3000 BC (Jansma, & French, 1994). Ancient Chinese believed in the importance of a healthy body and early on developed exercises that promoted health. These were internal forms of Kung fu; Taichi and Chikung. This paper is not a deep historical review of human history and adapted physical education. The focus is on foundations from the 19th century, specifically on the influence of Swedish gymnastics and early special education, represented by Montessori school. It is believed that adapted physical education started as corrective physical education and thus was directly influenced by Swedish medical gymnastics. On the other hand some authors believe that adapted physical education, as we know it today, was more influenced by early special education methods, which were developed by Itard (1775-1838), Seguin (1812-1880) and Montessori (1870-1952).
