Description
  • The aim of this article is to explore linguistic assumptions about politically correct language as discussed in Dutch newspapers. Most debate surround words such as %22allochtoon%22 which are used in the debate around multiculturalism. The linguist, Deborah Cameron, argues against seeing politically correct language as a form of euphemism. She argues that language change is driven by agents and therefore it is important to ask who has power. Some Dutch politicians think that by changing language use, either by prohibiting some words or by using words deemed more accurate to describe the multicultural society, a better and fairer society can be created. Others argue that this is a form of censorship which eventually leads to Orwellian thought control.
