Description
  • Due to continuously increasing of ecological awareness of highly developed societies, energetical environmentally friendly technologies are starting to be more popular. One of these methods is the gasification of biomass allowing to produce energy from renewable sources instead of the fossil fuels. Gasification process is a conversion of biomass to energy carriers namely low caloric value gas under conditions of high temperature and shortage of oxygen. One of the main problems associated with the gasification processes is formation of insoluble, high viscosity tars, which can lead to clogging of the gasification plant. Moreover those tars are often toxic for microorganisms and thus almost completely non biodegradable. That is why there is a real need to investigate and better understand of processes related with tars formation and their chemical nature. Development of appropriate chemical treatment methods to reduce the toxicity and enable to subsequent biological utilization of tars, would allow to use the gasification processes on a large scale, without harmful consequences to the environment. During the study tars were analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and by the measurement of COD, BOD5 and TOC parameters.
