Description
| - This paper deals with an evaluation of a state and development of the trade openness of the European Union and BRICS countries and its impact on trade and economic performance. Aim is to give a comprehensive picture of the state and development of the EU and BRICS countries trade openness and analyse how it can affect other parts of economic performance. The first part presents theoretical approaches of economic openness and its relation to economic performance. The second part shows trade analysis of the economies since 1980. In the third chapter, existence of correlation between the trade openness and gross domestic product per capita, export and import will be tested. The analysis uses indices of simple share of imports and exports of goods and services of national gross domestic product. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to confirm the hypothesis that the degree of involvement of the economy in international trade and its economic performance will be positively correlated in all countries. The analysis shows that there is a significant difference between the developed and developing countries. Developed economy, represented by the European Union, confirms its leading position because it reaches the highest values of trade openness throughout the period. Development of trade openness of BRICS countries is very diverse. In an overall assessment of the relative openness of the economies, it can be said that the EU and the BRICS countries belong rather among closed economies. The trade openness analysis also proves that evolution of trade openness in services follows the degree of trade openness in goods, but it moves at much lower levels. The degree of the BRICS countries trade openness in services is more than two to three times lower than the trade openness in services of the European Union.
