| Description
| - Political, economic, and social changes in the Czech Republic, including the Ostrava-Karvina region, uderscore a drawback of the former focus on industry, ferrous metallurgy, and the heavy-machinery industry in that region. A consequence of these activities is a devastated landscape whose recovery will be long and costly. Although expensive local landscape regeneration had been performed in the past, most of the financial recources allocated to this project did not fulfill all expectations. The reclaimed agricultural and forest land are still used extensively, and some of them are not used at all. Therefore, the investment of several million Czech crowns was not effective. Also, due to fast restructuring changes, former smaller industrial brownfields and industrial holdings for small and mid-sized enterprises are under-utilized. Czech membership in the European Union provides an important stimulus for phased radical changes of economic, ecological and social structures for the Ostrava-Karvina region,
