Description
  • In this study, the sorption capacity of plant biomass has been studied; particularly the ability of chemically pretreated biomass of both isolated roots and the mixture of roots, stems and leaves of an invasive plant Reynoutria japonica, to bind up Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The results of this biosorption study revealed that the rate and extent of copper ions uptake were affected by pH level, contact time, biomass concentration and initial metal concentration. The results of study at different pH levels, show that the maximum uptake of copper ions was obtained at pH 6 by biomass of roots; at pH 5 there were very similar results for both leaves and roots. In order to describe the kinetics of sorption of mixed biomass at pH 5, pseudo-second-order kinetic model was applied. Sorption isotherms were obtained for both biomass of roots (pH 5, biomass concentration 1 g/L and 10 g/L) and mixture of roots, stems and leaves (pH 5, biomass concentration 10 g/L). The equilibrium sorption data were described by the Langmuir and Freudlich isotherms models in both linear and non-linear forms; the best fit was obtained with non-linear Langmuir model. The maximal sorption capacity qmax 5.98 mg/g was found for the mixture biomass.
