Description
  • The fundamental knowledge of structural evolution, strengthening and degradation processes occurring during creep exposure is a prerequisite for successful development of ferritic steels with higher creep resistance. Weld joints on tubes from the creep resistance Cr-Mo-V low alloy and P91 steel have been studied to characterize the changes in microstructure that occur during long term creep exposure at 575°C for up to approximately 95.000 hours. The metallographic study included transmission microscopy investigation and quantitative evaluation has been carried out in order to determine variations in the size and distribution of minor phase particles and subgrain structures in the base material, heat affected zones and weld metal. Precipitation strengthening of the creep resistant ferritic steels depends on the interparticle spacing (IPS) of secondary phases. Particular M23C6 and MX particles have been defined for more correct information about precipitate dispersion and mainly for effective interparticle spacing calculation. The aim of the present paper is to describe the microstructural processes and the most important structural changes occurring during long term creep exposure at elevated temperatures.
