  • The bacterial quorum sensing signals N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones enable bacterial cells to regulate gene expression depending on population density, in order to undertake collective actions such as the infection of host cells. Only little is known about the molecular ways of plants reacting to these bacterial signals. In this study we show that the contact of Arabidopsis thaliana roots with N-hexanoyl-DL-homoserine-lactone (C6-HSL) resulted in distinct transcriptional changes in roots and shoots, respectively. Interestingly, unlike most other bacterial signals, C6-HSL influenced only a few defense-related transcripts. Instead, several genes associated with cell growth as well as genes regulated by growth hormones showed changes in their expression after C6-HSL treatment. C6-HSL did not induce plant systemic resistance against Pseudomonas syringae.   • Bakteriální signály („quorum sensing“) typu N-acyl-L-homoserin-laktonů umožňují bakteriálním buňkám regulovat expresi genů ve vztahu k denzitě bakteriální populace, a tak zvyšovat úspěšnost infekce hostitelských organizmů. Molekulární mechanismy, které se účastní těchto procesů u rostlin, téměř nejsou známy. V této práci je ukázáno, že kontakt kořenů Arabidopsis thaliana s N-hexanoyl-DL-homoserin-laktony (C6-HSL) vede k výrazným změnám v transkripci určitých genů v kořeni i v nadzemní části rostliny. Překvapivě však jde především o geny spojené s růstem nebo působením rostlinných hormonů, nikoli o geny primárně se účastnící obranné reakce u rostlin. Po působení C6-HSL nedochází k indukci systémové resistence rostliny, ale ke změně poměru hladin rostlinných hormonů auxinů a cytokininů a k elongaci kořenů. Rostliny Arabidopsis jsou schopny přijímat bakteriální C6-HSL, který pak indukuje změny na úrovni transkripce. Toto může přispívat k regulaci růstu rostlin v závislosti na mikrobiálním složení ...
