Description
  • Ways to improve mechanical properties on a surface of bulk ceramics were presented. First of all, samples of bulk ceramics were superficially remelted by a diode laser Rofin DL 031Q. In the series of following experiments the authors achieved a similar kind of surface treatment with a plasma torch conventionally utilized for plasma spraying. Commercial bulk ceramic materials produced via sintering or casting were treated. The materials were members of ternary systems, such as, magnesia-alumina-silica and zirconia-alumina-silica. Before and after thermal treatment, the microstructure was studied and the microhardness was measured in surface layers and also deep inside the bulk body. Slurry abrasion resistance was determined as well. Microhardness and wear resistance is improved with Eucor and at certain degree also regarding cordierite. The microstructural character of a completely remelted external layer, partly influenced intermediate layers, and the original bulk body is discussed.
