Description	Fungi are eukaryotic organisms classified as a single group, the kingdom of Fungi, which is independent of plants, animals, and bacteria. The macrofungi (mushrooms) represent a specific group of fungi that produce easily visible fruiting bodies, such as mushrooms or puffballs. Fungi have important biogeochemical roles in the biosphere and are intimately involved in the cycling of elements and in transformations of both organic and inorganic substrates. This article is focused on the ability of macrofungi to take up and accumulate trace elements (heavy metals) in their fruit-bodies.
