  • Strain measurement of an unidirectionally solidified single-crystal Al.sub.2./sub. O.sub.3./sub./single-crystal Y.sub.3./sub. Al.sub.5./sub. O.sub.12./sub. (YAG) eutectic composite was performed by neutron diffraction technique using a new time-of-flight (TOF) powder diffractometer, Sirius, installed at the spallation source of Neutron Science Laboratory of High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan. Siruius has a backward detector assembly consisting of 6 banks in which 500 one-dimensional .sup.3./sup. He position sensitive detectors (PSD`s) can be installed. Complete TOF diffraction patterns from the composite,and from the sintered specimens of YAG and Al.sub.2./sub. O.sub.3./sub. regarded as the reference materials for the strain evaluation, were recorded and fitted with use of Rietveld refinements. And the the particular (hkl) reflection peaks were analyzed by a curvefitting procedure for the estimation of residual strains of the two phases in the composite. From the full sets of
