  • Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most important plastics due to its massive production and wide variety of uses ranging from packaging materials to insulators. One of the most common applications is foamed PS, which is produced from expandable PS pellets using blowing agents. In the past, chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons were used. As these compounds are harmful to the environment, they are being replaced by alternative blowing agents such as alkanes or CO2. However, insufficient thermodynamic data are often available for the compounds in the literature. As a result, we measured the sorption equilibria and diffusion dynamics of n-pentane in polystyrene on a gravimetric apparatus and correlated the experimental results with mathematical models.
