Description
  • The mass transport of VOCs in and through polymers is in most cases accompanied by vapour concentration-evoked effects (swelling, plasticization, chain flexibility, reorganisation of dynamic free volume elements etc.) with a great impact on polymer structure and its behaviour. Multi-component VOCs mass transport in polymers, in term of its description by Fick's laws, irreversible thermodynamics, generalised Maxwell-Stefan approach (GMS) or models combining GMS or SDM with lattice-based theories etc., constitutes a rather complicated problem because the concentration dependent solubility or diffusivity of one component in the mixture can be influenced significantly by the other component(s). In real systems (VOCs in air or in water), such mutual effects could contribute positively or negatively to the total mass transport of components and therefore they can play an essential role in designing and tailoring of appropriate membrane separation processes.
