Description
  • The synthesis of adaptive particles composed of a thermo-responsive material (e.g. poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel) is a promising technology which could be employed in targeted delivery applications. The objective of the current work is to develop a simulation framework able to model the changing shape of particles of various structures. The simulation is based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The shape of the object is defined by discretizing it into a large number of inter-connected elements. The size of the elements is gradually changed during the simulation. As some elements can have different volume expansivity, the sample shape can also evolve in the course of the simulation run. A particle consisting of a hard shell with several openings and filled by a thermo-responsive gel has been used to demonstrate the methodology. Decreasing the temperature the gel would expand protruding out of the shell and thus changing the particle adhesion or transport properties, for example.
