Description
| - One of the methods of wastewater decolorization is biofiltration, when pollutants are decomposed to harmless or less toxic and less mutagenic substances by microorganisms. Various types of microorganisms can be used in different reactor arrangements. White-rot fungus mycelium immobilized on a carrier of a trickle-bed reactor is one of many alternatives. A two-dimensional dynamic mathematical model describing the biofiltration process in the trickle-bed reactor was developed. The studied system is composed of two domains: a biofilm formed by the mycelium and a liquid film trickling over the biofilm. The biofilm is modeled as a two-dimensional domain while the liquid film is represented by a biofilm boundary condition. The model consists of mass balances of the main nutrient and of the dye in both the domains and takes into account substances advection, diffusion, nutrient consumption and dye degradation, as well as biofilm growth.
