  • In the case of semi-crystalline polymers, such as LLDPE, the equilibrium sorption in the polymer-penetrant system can?t be described as the simple sorption of penetrant in the amorphous polymer phase, because the swelling of amorphous polymer is elastically constrained by the surrounding crystallites. This constraining effect is the source of a large discrepancy between measured sorption data and theoretical predictions. The fraction of constrained segments of amorphous polymer has been determined from our previous gravimetric measurements in the apparatus utilizing magnetic suspension balance. The constraining effect is affecting also diffusion transport of penetrants in LLDPE. Therefore we constructed and are going to introduce a new pressure-decay apparatus capable to measure diffusion and sorption both above and below the polymer melting temperature.
