Description
  • High-impact polypropylene (hiPP) is an important polymeric material with a wide range of applications. Due to its superior properties such as very good processability, high solidity, rigidity and toughness, this material founds its application particularly in automobile industry. High-impact polypropylene manufactured in the catalytic polymerization reactor is composed from tough porous isotactic polypropylene (iPP) matrix and from soft ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPR = ethylene propylene rubber) built in the pores and fractures of iPP matrix. Downstream processing of hiPP involving melting changes the morphology of hiPP. The additional (3rd) phase was found inside the EPR domains in the molded specimen of hiPP. This inclusion phase is either polyethylene (PE) or semi-crystalline ethylene-propylene copolymer with long PE sequences. This paper first addresses the mapping of the distribution of phases in hiPP and the systematic characterization of hiPP morphology by suitable descriptors. The structure
