Description
  • Transport of monomers, co-monomers and diluents in porous polyolefin particles occurring in catalytic polymerization reactors affects the rate of (co-)polymerization, the rate of particle degassing in the down-stream processing and the spatial distribution of copolymer composition in polyolefin particles. Investigations of monomer transport in PE and PP particles by gravimetric techniques conducted in our laboratory have confirmed the existence of large compact zones of polymer in polymer particles. Bobák et al. (2008) have shown that degassing of polyolefin particles is generally non-Fickian, as the fast degassing from small-size polymer zones is followed by a slow degassing from large polymer zones, cf. Figure below. The characteristic time of degassing of polypropylene (PP) particles is tens to hundreds of seconds, which is about 100 times slower than it was previously considered in theoretical considerations based on the so-called multi-grain model. We found that bidisperse particle morphology co
