Description
  • Aqueous electrolyte systems can exhibit complex behavior, e.g., nonlinear coupling between potential difference and electric current, bistability, oscillations and signal amplification. Qualitative examples of experimental observations of such behavior of simple ionic systems are reported. Mass, heat and momentum balances together with Gauss law of electrostatics are given and transformed into dimensionless forms. Mathematical modelling is used to analyze in detail complex behavior of several systems. The formation of very narrow regions (from nanometer to micrometer scale) of very low conductivity with very high electric field strength (10^8 V/m) is the basis of non-linear behavior. These very thin regions are called %22ionic gates%22.
