  • Activated sludge is at present the most widely used biological treatment process for both domestic and industrial wastewater. This paper is a state-of-art review. It describes devices used for on-line measurement and monitoring of wastewater together with analyses used to characterize wastewater, as well as options available for control of the wastewater treatment process. Adaptive control, fuzzy logic, expert systems and neural networks are studied and introduced to be concerned with dynamic features, non-linearities, not clearly stated goals and the use of qualitative information. This paper also evaluates potential benefits of thermophilic aerobic digestion, promising technology of wastewater treatment.
