Description
| - The dust is a suitable indicator for the assessment of indoor contamination with perfluoroalkylated compounds (PFASs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Due to their unique characteristics, they are used in a variety of consumer and industrial products from which can be released to the environment. The industrial fires as well as the disposal of treated products can be the serious source of environmental contamination with PFASs and BFRs. Since only the small amount of dust sample is sometimes available ({ 1 g) and a different group of mentioned chemicals are determined separately by different methods, the new analytical approach for their simultaneous analysis was developed. For the isolation of analytes from dust was employed matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD). Using this method two fractions: (i) hexane (23 BFRs) and (ii) methanol (18 PFASs and 4 BFRs) were obtained. For the identification/quantification of target analytes the two different techniques were employed: gas chromatography and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC?MS/MS, LC?MS/MS). Finally, 52 samples (12 households x 4 sampling sites) were analyzed. The high variability between concentrations of PFASs and BFRs in various dust samples was observed. The concentrations of PFASs were in the wide range 7.1?1630 ng/g (median 79 ng/g). The most abundant PFASs were C7?C9 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) found in more than 80% of samples. The concentrations of the most abundant representatives of BFRs ? decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) were in the range of 53.5?8585 (median 168) and 6.3?162747 ng/g (634 ng/g).
