Description
| - A novel approach for the authentication and quality control of medicinal plants has been developed. The inovative technique Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) ion source hyphenated with high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF) was employed for metabolomic profiling of polar and non-polar compounds extracted with various solvents from medicinal plants (lemon balm, mentha piperita, nettle) and different varieties of flaxseeds. Using relevant statistical tools (principal component analysis and linear dicriminant analysis) individual medicinal plant species and their mixtures were differentiated, and the flaxseed samples were separated according to the genetic basis and content of α-linolenic acid. DART-TOFMS metabolomic profiles could be employed in databases creating, which represent the tool for the quality characterisation and authentication of plant species.
