Description	Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a synthetic compound that was developed as a technological solution to a technology-driven problem created by air pollution from vehicle emissions. Its major effect is to increase combustion efficiency and reduce air pollution. An essential source of MTBE in environment comes from leaking underground storage tanks at gasoline stations and accidents in gasoline transport. Owing to these results the more responsible attitudes and practices ought to be introduced to minimize the impact of accidental releases and operational failures in gasoline handling. The European average oxygenate concentration in petrol is about 2.5%-wt, but the concentration varies widely from country to country and from refiner to refiner. The EU Fuels Directive 98/70/EEC set new mandatory specification on petrol. From 1 January 2000 new limits on aromatic 42% v/v were set and no later than 1 January 2005, the total aromatics shall not exceed 35% v/v.
