All sites were vegetated with different plant species including different types of grasses and trees Number of micro-organisms is not dependent on PCB concentration but it varied in bulk and vegetated soil. Samples collected from bulk soil contained even 10-100 times less microorganisms than samples from vegetated sites. Microbial consortia isolated from contaminated soil were able to degrade PCBs under laboratory conditions in the presence of biphenyl.
