  • For several types of microstructures the effective properties of porous ceramics can be predicted using power laws or exponential relations, apart from the universally valid rigorous bounds (Voigt, Wiener, Hashin-Shtrikman). In this contribution these relations, as well as a new empirical relation (sigmoidal average), are recalled for the Young's modulus and thermal conductivity. Further, phase mixture models based on the rigorous bounds are used to estimate the grain size dependence of the Young's modulus and thermal conductivity for nanocrystalline ceramics, using cubic and tetrakaidecahedral cells. It is shown that for the Young's modulus (where the phase property contrast is typically close to unity) the prediction is quite sharp but the grain size effect is small, whereas for thermal conductivity (where the phase property contrast may be far away from unity) the grain size effect can be large.
