| - Issues of gender have played an important, yet till recently omitted role in the formation of Czech modern art. Debates about sexuality, the so called “woman’s question”, and old as well as modern types of femininity and masculinity that started to develop in the 1860s and culminated after fin de siècle in Czech lands and elsewhere in Europe, made a crucial impact not only on art but also on its reception and interpretation. The number of texts focused on gender, sexuality and art that were published in Czech periodicals and occasionally also in exhibition catalogues and single publications in the period of modernism was enormous. This book mentions and reflects only some of them but even they clearly manifest that the discourse of Czech modern art and art criticism was inherently related with gender politics. The book explains the sources of popular ideas about sexual predetermination of art, frames them into the context of visual art, culture, and society of the period from around 1870 through the Second World War, and, last but not least, underlines the importance of some little known or marginalized women journalists, writers, art critics, and art historians who significantly contributed to the discussions about modern art, including applied art. Yet, the central theme of this book is contexts of both liberal and applied arts rather than individual personalities.

- Při formování českého moderního umění hrály vztahy mezi pohlavími a sexuální odlišnost významnou, byť do nedávné doby přehlíženou úlohu. Debaty o sexualitě, ženské otázce a starých i moderních podobách femininity a maskulinity, které se v českém prostředí stejně jako jinde v Evropě začaly rozvíjet již v šedesátých letech 19. století a kulminovaly po fin de siècle, se výrazně otiskly nejen do umění, ale rovněž do jeho recepce a interpretace. Množství textů věnujících se otázkám pohlaví a umění, které byly publikovány v českém prostředí v době zrodu a formování modernismu, je z dnešního pohledu ohromující. Tato kniha zachycuje a interpretuje jen část z nich, avšak i z nich je patrné, že dobový umělecký a umělecko-kritický diskurz byl silně genderově podmíněn. Kniha nastiňuje zdroje populárních názorů na pohlavní podmíněnost umění a zasazuje je do kontextu vývoje na dobové české výtvarné scéně. Pozornost věnuje jak volnému umění, tak umění užitému jakožto významné oblasti ženské tvůrčí činnosti. Všímá si vztahu mateřství a umění na pozadí dobových diskusí o ženské kulturní a umělecké emancipaci a důkladně se zaobírá dobovými polemikami nad fenoménem „ženského umění“. (en)
