Description
  • If we want to understand the changes that took place in contemporary art at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries we must first examine the transformation in the concept of the “contemporary”. If during the nineties the typical concept of contemporaneity was the pure presence of a post-historical stage of history, in which everything was permitted, the beginning of the new millennium ushered in contemporaneity as heterochrony, a situation in which, prima facie, everything seems to be possible, whereas in fact almost nothing is possible. Instead of the neoliberal dream of the ultimate generalisation of economic laws to encompass all human activity, a sobering up took place on first the political and later the economic level, which revived interest in the project of modernity.
