  • This review focuses on hedgerow-defined medieval field patterns in the Czech Republic, called pluzinas. In medieval Czech, the word pluzina meant the agricultural land belonging to one village - its crop fields, meadows, pastures and roads. Today, the term describes the remnants of the original field patterns, which occur in some parts of the Czech landscape as a system of hedgerows separating long, narrow, often S-shaped fields. Following a brief outline of the historical circumstances in which medieval pluzinas were established and of their subsequent development, the review focuses on the remnants of medieval pluzinas in present-day landscapes, their form and typology, as well as their ecological and aesthetic values. After recapitulating the resources and methods used in pluzina research, the review is concluded by an overview of the various aspects of pluzina conservation and by presenting some future research directions.
