Description
  • Plant vegetation plays important role in the protection of hillslopes exposed to overland flow and soil erosion. After the clear-cut of mature spruce stands in the Jizerka experimental catchment (the Jizera Mts., North Bohemia), the significant rill erosion was found namely in skid roads originated by skidding the harvested timber. Significant loss of soil was related to the length of erosion rills. The relationship between vegetation characteristics (plant cover, species richness, percentage of plants representing particular life and growth forms), and attributes of erosion rills (age, depth, and slope) was studied. We conclude that rising erosion intensity causes: lower percentage cover of vegetation, lower species richness, lower proportion of hemicryptophytes, and higher proportion of plants forming clusters or bunches, which may form 100% of plant species present.
