Description	The presented study discusses evaluation of the winter period in relation to comfort and discomfort of animals bred in stable and shed buildings. Calculation-based temperature that was determined as the average temperature of the coldest pentad from November to March, in winters 1921/22 - 2007/2008, was used as the fundamental characteristic. The database was created using data from Praha – Karlov station. The results clearly show that the coldest pentad can occur at any time, although the number of the so called severe winters has been declining in the most recent decade.
