Description
  • Anthomyiidae are a family of Diptera with 216 species currently known from the Czech Republic (Rozkošný 1997d, Meixnerová & Rozkošný 1999, Michelsen & Barták 2001). There is no recent monographic treatise on the family within the scope of the Czech Republic or Central Europe, the basic work being still the monograph by Hennig (1966-1976). No attempt has been yet made to compile a list of species that could be considered as endangered or vulnerable in the Czech Republic. The larvae occupy very diverse feeding niches. Most species are phytophagous, infesting shoots, leaves, stalks, flowers or seeds of various plants. Larvae of certain species live in fungi, decomposing substrates of plant origin, in dung or in nests of birds and mammals. Some species live as parasitoids of Orthoptera or cleptoparasites in nests of Hymenoptera. Twenty-two species proposed into two categories of protection include taxa penetrating into our country from the south and reaching here the northernmost limit of their
