  • Seventeen species of the family Piophilidae are currently known from the Czech Republic (Barták 2001e). The fauna of this family has not yet been subjected to monographic treatment concerning the Czech Republic. The most important published sources are works by Zuska & Laštovka (1965, 1969). There is yet no recent treatise on the distribution and degree of endangerment for the Czech Republic. The classification and nomenclature of the list presented here was employed in accordance with Zuska & Barták (1997a). Various decomposing substrates are the environment for the development of larvae. Some species prefer cadavers in advanced degree of decomposition; some others live in rotting fungi and vegetables or in other substrates, or they exceptionally (Neottiophilum praeustum) suck blood of young birds. Larvae of the cosmopolite species Pio phila casei are known pests in the foodstuff industry. One species is included into the list presented here that is considered as regionally extinct in CR (RE
