  • Dandelion root contains up to 40% of inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Both compounds are potential prebiotics exhibiting bifidogenic effects. Previously, FOS and inulin of chicory and Jerusalem articoke origins were tested. Also other oligosaccharides like raffinose-serie-oligosaccharides from soya (raffinose, stachyose) have similar effects. On the contrary, bifidogenic effect of dandelion root has never been tested. Hence, the aim of the present work was to determine the impact of water extract from dandelion root on the growth of 14 bifidobacteria strains. Dandelion root extract (DRE) was tested for the carbohydrate composition. Four strains of bifidobacteria were tested for their ability to utilize different carbohydrate from DRE. Beater (200 ml) with dried dandelion root (30 g) was poured with 100 ml of boiling water.
